Model Diary

Gavin Rajah runway

As ‘fun’ and ‘amazing’ and bla bla bla that Cape Town Fashion Week was for guests (see any Cape Town blog for details), let’s not forget the main characters of this affair: the models. Think what you will about them, but Jess Hull kindly shared her fashion week diary with me and let me in on all the behind the scenes secrets.

Sunday 10 July

It’s 8am and fittings start at Cape Town Convention Centre. It’s a lot of waiting around but such a good chance to get to know all the girls and plus I get to try on many beautiful clothes.

Fittings go on until Tuesday and each day ends at about 4 or 6pm depending on which designers you do fittings for.

Wednesday 13th

It’s the Foschini Fasttrack shows. I have to be at the venue at 8.30am for rehearsals, and hair and make up call time is 2.30pm. Breakfast and lunch are provided– amazing food, pies, chips, salads, soups, desserts, all round amazing (which all the models actually eat– a lot). I am out of the venue at around 9pm-ish but am far too tired to go out. Doing the fasttrack show is really cool because it showcases young designers and it’s good to see the potential and talent SA has.

Thursday 14th

I am at the cticc again at 8am for more rehearsals, make up again at 2.30pm, then the first show kicks off with TART/Michelle Ludek, 2nd show is Habits, 3rd show Gavin Rajah and last Abigail Betz (definitely found my future wedding dress in her collection – such elegant and beautiful stuff). I’m especially nervous for the Rajah show because of the seriously high heels, but thank goodness it went fine. (I have a fear of falling off the runway – but if you do, just laugh it off, smile and carry on). This is one of the longest days as we literally have about 10-15 mins in between shows to change our looks completely for each designer. My hair and face take strain but it is well worth it, GHD and MAC are amazing! Am home at about 23:30.Friday 15th

Today is a little less hectic but it’s still another early morning nonetheless (8am). We are off to rehearsals at the Land Bank in Queen Victoria road – the venue for the Dr Rey lingerie show. Very cool to meet the Doctor and his wife after seeing them on their reality show Dr 90210, and his lingerie and swimwear are beautiful. I am a bit nervous for his show because 1 of my outfits is a gstring and I’ve never worn one in public (eek!) but it was fine!

Next: back to the CTICC for Lalesso/Lisp/Nucleus rehearsals then makeup call at 2.30 again… The Dr Rey show ends around 23:30 and a few of us girls head to The Fez for a sneaky unwind but it has to be an early night as it’s the David Tlale show the next day (which I am only informed about that day!!).

Saturday 16th

Another early rise (8am- blegh) for rehearsals and fittings (I’m a bit late) for David’s show at The Bromwell. This show is interesting as it’s rather a showcase than a ramp walk of his designs in different rooms and the crowd moves from room to room.

Then it’s on to the City Hall for a retrospective show at the Madiba event. That’s my final show but I stay behind to watch Stefania Morland, also very beautiful.  Afterwards I’m off to the after party with the girls which is held at the Land Bank – good to have fun after a week like ours.

I need my beauty sleep!

After getting about 6 hours sleep per night, it’s safe to say I’m ready for my Sunday in bed.

After all the makeup and hair ironing, I definitely need some serious beauty care. When I get home I like to use the Roobois facial wash its t works really well for me. I also make sure to lather on the moisturisers so my skin doesn’t dry out. The hair stylists from GHD gave each of us a bottle of an amazing treatment to help our hair get its moisture back after all the GHD-ing.

The horror…

The worst part of the whole week: they bleached all the models’ eyebrows (even the dark girls) but thank goodness they dyed them back to normal at the end of the week – mine had turned orange!

Plans:

I had so much fun this last week and have made some amazing friends. Starting varsity again on the 25th then I’m off the Joburg on the 27th for the Elle Macpherson lingerie show for 2 days.

Thanks Jess for sharing your fashion week with us!

Exclusive Model Interview: Chekesha

Style: "Porcelain vivid"

Fresh new faces are a frequent thing in the modeling world, but once in a while there is one face that stands out, makes an impact, and tells a story.  I was super excited to hear that I was going to be interviewing just that… Fashion De Arte readers, I give you the beautiful Chekesha. We get personal in an exclusive interview with this intriguing beauty… I know you can’t wait to find out about her so read on and enjoy!

Q: Introduce yourself to the Fashion De arte readers

I’m Chekesha, from Houston, Texas. I played Division 1 basketball in College, and I have a Computer Science Degree.  I currently model in New York!

Q: How did your modelling career begin?

When I was in High School, one of my teachers came up to me and said “You should model.” Just like that. She gave me her former agency in Houston’s contact info and I went in to see them. They loved me! So between Track practice or AAU games, I’d do a few jobs here and there.

Q: When was the first moment you realized, “This is what I want to do”?

Shortly after I signed with my agency in Houston, I graduated High School and moved to Arkansas on a full basketball scholarship so I focused on that. Besides, there isn’t any fashion in Arkansas lol! Around my junior year my mom called me, all excited saying she had run into and old friend and she was a photographer in LA and she wanted to shoot with me. As soon as I had a break from school I went to LA and did the shoot! It changed my life! I was like, “Wow, I think I really want to give this a shot!”. I got an agency in LA but decided to move to NY after signing with an agency here.

Q: So, Why modeling?

Modeling is definitely a challenge for me. It’s totally opposite from my personality. I’ve played sports all my life so I’m more of a guys girl, t-shirt and jeans girl. I like nice things, but contrary to popular belief, I’m very low maintenance.  I love sitting in the make-up chair and transforming.

Q: Who have you worked with and who do you dream of working with in the future?

I’ve worked with some amazing photographers: Sinden Collier, Terry Richardson, and Yu Tsai. I’ve done editorials for Essence, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Vibe magazines. I’ve also shot with and gotten to meet tons of celebrities. I’ve done a few commercials, have been featured in TV shows and movies, but my dream job is definitely Victoria Secret!!

Q: What has been your most memorable modeling experience?

I did a Nike campaign, I was totally in my element. They had an Olympic trainer and had us running on the treadmill, doing dips, squats push ups and sit-ups, jogging laps, and lifting weights. Not to mention, the Nike shoes we were shooting in were…two sizes too small.

Q: What is your perception of a positive body image and what are your thoughts on this phrase generally?

A positive body image in my perspective is a body like mine! I always say I’m skinny with plenty. I have a little curves, but in my business that’s more bad than a good thing. Every model I know is on a diet, its kind of sad but it’s the job we signed up for.

Q: Everyone seems to be a model now a days, what do you think separates a real from a fake?

Yep everyone’s a model these days, or a singer/rapper. In my personal opinion, money separates the real from the fake. If your getting paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to take some pics advertising a product, then that is REAL! If you are paying to take these pictures and are just on some blog or doing it to get twitter followers then that’s FAKE.

Q: Do you have any aspirations or goals outside of your own modeling career?

I have a computer science degree, but I’m really interested in starting a cosmetics line. I’m a cosmetic junky so I think that would be great for me.

Q: Is there anywhere else in the world you would like to be based besides NY?

Only if my job was to relax all day, I would want to be on my own island!

The FUN questions: QUICK FIRE ROUND!

Chekesha had to answer this next round of the questions with the first thing that came into her head. No cheating!

Q: Have you ever used your looks to blag something or get something you want OUTSIDE of your career?

Oh I use my looks all the time. I get out of speeding tickets and skip in lines. I use them to get away with that extra 10 lbs on my checked luggage, free food.. I could go on and on lol.

Q: What can’t you live without?

Besides my family, there is no way I could live without my cell phone, credit card, and mascara.

Q: Fashion De Arte reader Nicole asks: “Is becoming a model half hard work and half natural ability or is it something that can be learnt”?

In my personal opinion, I think it’s all there. You have to work hard at almost everything to be successful, with modeling there has to be some natural ability but that’s just the base coat. Everything else is learnt from experience, watching others, taking direction from photographers, knowing what you like and what clients respond most to.

Q: And finally – tell the fashion de arte readers ONE thing that you have never about yourself that you have never told before in an interview?

I’m terrified of animals. Worst fear ever! Before I walk into someones house for the first time I always ask if they have pets. I don’t need any surprises!

For booking inquiries, contact Chekesha on her MM!

Fashionably Yours,

Exclusive Model Interview: Sussan Zeck

beauty_v3

We welcome a fresh new face to the fashion industry all the way from Germany. Her name is Sussan Zeck and she brings not only a unique and gentle look to high fashion, but she also entails an honest opinion on what life is really like as a model. I was lucky enough to snag an exclusive interview with Zeck and I have to admit it was hard not to be drawn to her outgoing and genuine personality.

Q. Where and how did your modeling career begin?

A. My modeling career began on a lucky day in Munich. Fate got me into modeling and this journey was possible because someone, Sylvia Leifheit (the owner of a Munich based agency) discovered and first believed in me as a teenager. I’m very grateful and want to say thank you once more as this single day changed my life.

Q. Have you always wanted to be a model?

A. No, I had no ambitions at all of becoming a model. Part of my early life was my violin which I had studied since I was a little kid. Languages and writing have also always been passions of mine, and I wanted to choose any job in these fields. When I started modeling full-time, I kept studying languages and writing for magazines. I’m a writer at heart but modeling gives me many great opportunities. I love all challenges and excitements that modeling brings especially all of the journeys and the interesting people.

Q. What designers have you worked for?

A. I’m grateful to have worked for many well-known names and big fashion houses. However I don’t want to list all of them now as it might seem pretentious. To name some, I’ve presented collections for names such as Roberto Cavalli, Alberta Ferretti, Blumarine, Guess and many others…

Q. What places has your career taken you?

A. Some of the most memorable places are: New York, Paris, Milan, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Vienna including some deserted islands that I don’t know the name of. Some of the buildings and sites I’ve been to for jobs have been among the most impressive buildings, architecture-wise I’ve seen in all my life.

Q. Has your career changed directions in any way?

A. It didn’t really change direction, but when I started I did lots of runway work, many shows and showrooms. I was considered as the typical “runway” girl and in “runway” board of some of my agencies. I loved this time and many of those shows were magic moments and I got the chance to meet many people from show business because of those jobs. I’m still doing shows but I’m focusing more on print work, editorials and campaigns now. I’ve become extremely selective in the work I accept. I always say it’s better doing a huge job and then having no work for six months afterward than doing a small job every day.

Q. What would you say your most exciting modeling job was?

A. Shooting with my face covered completely in glitter. The make-up was already exciting but the shoot was even more so. It felt magical and I could only move my eyes. Shooting on a skyscraper in New York was exciting too – it gave me a lot of positive energy. I’ve also liked traveling in night trains with fellow girls for shows. It was very tough but we always had such a blast going everywhere together and experienced so many funny adventures going around.

Q. I noticed the bright red hair in your photo shoot. Is this Rihanna inspired at all?

A. Haha! During my modeling time I changed my hair color very often, and went through the full range of colors. I went from blonde to red as clients often requested me as a redhead. When I was blonde, I had only one red haired shot in my book, and most of the time clients chose me only because of that picture. So I decided to go red due to the advice of one of my agencies. Being a redhead gives me even more energy and positive vibes. I’ve also had to adjust my wardrobe to this, so my hair color is not Rihanna-inspired, although I do love her as an artist.

Q. What are you currently reading?
A. Gabriel Barylli’s “Ballerina” is currently guiding me on flights and in waiting rooms.

Q. Any modeling dreams?
A. I’d love to dive for Zena Holloway

Q. Any advice for Fashion de arte readers?
A. Do everything you can, in this time you’re given, in the location you are. It was said by Nikosi Johnson, a South African child battling with HIV/AIDS. Nelson Mandela referred to him as an “Icon for the struggle of life”. Nikosi’s life is the subject of the book: “We’re all the same” (by Jim Wooten). Love this Quote…

We ♥ Gwen Lu

gwen lu II

Malaysian-Chinese model, Gwen Lu stands confident at 5 ft 9.5 in and is currently signed to Major Model Management in NYC. We happen to think she is pretty gorg! Check out the spread she recently did with photographer Stian Foss.

She described a day in New York to Tattler Magazine”

“It’s hectic! Castings start in the morning and go on till evening. I spend most of the day underground connecting trains or navigating my way through New York in search for the place I have to be at. At night, I usually stay in front of my laptop and chat with my friends online and reply emails.”

When asked about her future plans, she responded, “I just follow my heart and do what I love.”

Lady Le Bon

Amber Le Bon

I feel like Amber Le Bon kind of burst onto the scene… no warning, no special introductions. One minute she wasn’t there and the next minute BAM!! Ok I know that she has been around for a couple of years but hey!! One of Britain’s Hottest lady’s in fashion looks like she is here for good, and it has to be said of late I have felt myself beginning to see what all the fuss is about. I must admit I started to take real notice of her when I saw Vogue UK tweeting about what she was wearing (twitter can be such a legend sometimes) but my addiction to magazines made me stumble across a story in Vogue where she was raiding her mothers wardrobe (Yes, I was jealous)

After that she started springing up in all of my beloved mags. This somewhat fashion Goddess seems to be invited to every happening party and every swanky event and its not hard to see why. Every young girl in London (with “that” modelesque look) wants to be like her and every man wants to be with her.

So, who is Amber Le Bon.  Yes, she is daughter to stunning supermodel Yasmin Le Bon and Duran Duran frontman, Simon Le Bon but the 21 year old model (signed to Elite Modeling Agency – New York and Models 1 Agency – London) is fast becoming a style icon that many can relate to due her tendency to mix high street and designer with a bit of vintage flare! The face of Forever 21 really does seem to have it all… and I love it! I adore her style! She’s the quirky, sometimes awkward looking, a pretty girl and hopefully she is here to stay!

Love this

P.S. Does she remind you of anyone?
